How to build a lawyer email list
To build a lawyer email list, pick the people who buy what you sell (usually the managing partner at small firms, the firm administrator or legal operations at larger ones). Then filter a B2B database by the Law Practice industry, job title, location and firm size, and export verified work emails.
Legal software, marketing agencies, court reporters, expert witnesses and staffing firms all sell to lawyers, but each needs a different list. A court reporter wants local litigators; a software vendor wants managing partners nationwide.
Who to target inside a law firm
| Role | Where they decide | Job titles to search |
|---|---|---|
| Managing partner or owner | Almost everything at firms under about 50 people | Managing Partner, Founding Partner, Owner, Principal, Attorney at Law |
| Partner | Tools for their own practice group | Partner, Senior Partner, Equity Partner, Shareholder |
| Attorney or associate | Users, and buyers of litigation support | Attorney, Associate Attorney, Trial Attorney, Litigation Attorney |
| Legal operations | Software and vendors at larger firms | Director of Legal Operations, Legal Operations Manager |
| Firm administrator | Day-to-day vendors, staffing, office and IT | Firm Administrator, Legal Administrator, Office Manager, Chief Operating Officer |
| Marketing | Agencies and websites at mid-size and large firms | Marketing Director, Chief Marketing Officer |
| General counsel (in-house) | Outside counsel and legal software at companies | General Counsel, Head of Legal, Chief Legal Officer |
Often a partner likes your product and the administrator signs. Put both on the list. How to find decision makers in a company covers buying groups.
Split by practice area and firm size
Use Keywords for the practice area and add the matching attorney title. Run one search, and one email, per practice area.
| Practice area | Keywords to try | Titles to add | Typical buyers of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | personal injury, car accident, wrongful death | Personal Injury Attorney, Trial Attorney | Marketing, intake, case funding, medical experts |
| Family law | family law, divorce, child custody | Family Law Attorney, Divorce Attorney | Marketing, practice software |
| Estate planning | estate planning, wills, trusts, probate | Estate Planning Attorney, Probate Attorney | Document software, referral partners |
| Immigration | immigration, visa, green card | Immigration Attorney | Case management, translation |
| Criminal defense | criminal defense, DUI | Criminal Defense Attorney | Marketing, investigators, experts |
| Business and corporate | corporate law, business law, mergers | Corporate Attorney, Business Attorney | Contract tools, data rooms |
| Employment | employment law, labor law | Employment Attorney, Labor Attorney | Experts, e-discovery |
| Real estate | real estate law, title, closings | Real Estate Attorney | Title and closing services |
Employee Headcount counts everyone, including paralegals, so a 15-person firm might have 6 lawyers.
| Firm type | Employee Headcount | Who to email |
|---|---|---|
| Solo and small | 1 to 10, 11 to 20 | Managing partner or owner |
| Small to mid-size | 21 to 100 | Managing partner plus firm administrator |
| Mid-size and regional | 101 to 250, 251 to 500 | Firm administrator, COO, marketing director |
| Large | 501 to 1000 and up | Legal operations, IT, marketing, procurement |
| In-house legal teams | 251 to 500 and up, any industry | General Counsel, Head of Legal, Legal Operations |
How to build it in ContactYard
The example follows Harborgrid, a fictional intake software company selling to personal injury and family law firms in Texas.
Step 1: Set the industry to Law Practice
Under Industry, choose Government and Legal, sub-industry Law Practice. This keeps out in-house counsel and government lawyers.
Step 2: Set location and firm size
Step 3: Add the job titles
In Job Title, add Managing Partner, Founding Partner, Owner, Partner and Firm Administrator. Leave matching on Smart; switch to Exact if a short title pulls in too much.
Under Exclude job titles, add Legal Assistant, Legal Secretary, Intern, Law Clerk and Receptionist. Exclude Associate too if you only want deciders.

Step 4: Narrow to the practice area
In Keywords, add “personal injury” for one search and “family law” for another. Use the exclude box to drop a practice area.
Step 5: Check, save and export
Open 10 to 20 rows to check they are Texas firms with a partner or administrator on each. Click Save; data refreshes every 30 days, so rerunning next month picks up new partners.

Turn on Email required, and Phone required if you call, then export. One credit covers the verified email and the mobile when available. How to build a prospect list explains every filter.
In-house general counsel list
Leave Industry empty or pick the industries you serve. Add General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Head of Legal, Chief Legal Officer and Director of Legal Operations, with Employee Headcount 251 to 500 and above.

Paste up to 1,000 firm domains into Company Domain and add titles. Have names but no emails? Upload them to Enrich Contacts.
Verify every email
Lawyers move firms often, and old addresses bounce and hurt your sending domain. Every ContactYard work email is verified before you get it, inside the same single credit.
Other tools charge 4 to 12 credits for the same contact. Inherited an old file? See why your bounce rate is high and how to check if an email address is valid.
